Adaptive/Challenger

Recreational Activities for Kids With Special Needs

YMCA Adaptive Programs also known as Challenger offers a variety of recreational activities year round for girls and boys ages 5 – 25 years of age with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities. Challenger helps participants to learn new skills, participate in individual and team activities, build friendships, and have fun. Challenger is valuing, treating and providing opportunities for all kids including those with disabilities.

Activities are supported by coaches and by a buddy system in which volunteers assist participants when needed during the activity or game. Our buddies not only support our players on the field or classroom, but they also contribute in broader ways. Social interaction among players and buddies often gives players a completely new outlet for communication and exchange. Over the years, long-lasting friendships have been forged through the Challenger Program. We've found that the players aren't the only ones who benefit.

Sports Complex

Soon our Challenger athletes will be able to enjoy a sports complex of their own that will have a rubber athletic surface-removing the barriers, accommodating wheelchairs and walkers, and cushioning falls for children with special needs. We are currently raising community contributions to make this state-of-the-art facility a reality. Learn more.
